What are Bowie Knives?

bowie knives

Jim Bowie became famous for his knife-fighting skills largely because of the Sandbar Duel in Mississippi. He won the fight using a knife later known as a “Bowie knife.” This first Bowie knife was a gift from Jim Bowie’s brother and was made by a blacksmith named James Black.

The shape of Bowie knives is quintessentially American, though it was taken from the Spanish folding knives of the time. The most distinctive feature is the clip point, where the blade’s spine dips down to form the tip. The function of the clip point is to make the blade more streamlined and thus better for piercing. The back edge of a clip point may or may not be bevelled and sharpened.

Many materials may be used to make the blades of Bowie Knives. Stainless steel is often used to make a blade that is resistant to rust and fairly durable. Cheap blades made from other materials can be difficult to sharpen and, if sharpened, may not hold an edge for very long. Aside from the blade’s quality, another factor that should be considered when shopping for Bowie knives is the quality of the handle. Suppose the knife is to be used for hunting or other outdoor activities. In that case, the ease of gripping it in various conditions is important. An outdoor knife should be easy to hold in cold or wet weather and skinning or gutting animals.

Bear & Son Cutlery CB00 Cocobola Gold Rush Bowie with Leather Sheath Knife

Very impressed by its functionality and presentation. It came with a razor edge, although Sandvik is not considered a premium steel by today’s standards with powder metallurgy leaving these old steels in the dust performance wise, it performs very well in my experience and has excellent rust resistance. Easy to sharpen too. The brass guard needed to be polished which is what I would have expected. This knife is very usable as a mild chopper or slicer. The sheath seems to be of decent quality with a nice ring to allow it to comfortably be worn on a belt. Under 100 bucks, it’s a must have for any collector!

Cold Steel 81B Wild West Bowie, 10 3/4″, Silver

I retired my Western 49 to save as a pass it on. While the cold steel is an hommage to it in so many ways, they are not even close. The cold steel is much bigger, heavier and slightly off centerline. While a good type bowie knife and close replacement I just couldn’t use it. Because the blade is much bigger the handle to blade transition is awkward,. It feels like the handle is almost too small for this blade. It looks oddly like a weak spot . A small handle to a big blade. Because the blade does not transition to a near equal ratio I feel hesitant to press it for chopping much, only because the W49 is nearly flawless in this regard the Cold steel not quite the replacement I need. Pros, as a Bowie goes it meets all the criteria. Big enough to chop with, can be used as a small sword, sharp enough to clean and process food and game and the “S” guard is well anchored. Just not what I wanted.
